Nurses’ Note:
Want to remember something?
Write it down, take a photo, draw a picture or do some hands-on exploration. There’s some truth to the phrase “in one ear and out the other,” according to new research. If you’re like the subjects in this study, your ability to remember things you’ve heard is not as good as your ability to remember things you’ve seen or touched. Just like a phone number that you don’t jot down or dial right away, auditory information is lost quickly, while visual and tactile information is easier to retain.
If you need to remember something, write it down, take a picture or touch it to make it stick in your mind. Knowing that people have a poor memory for sound can help you to help others.
Want your spouse to bring you something back from the grocery store? A quick call or verbal reminder may not be enough. Provide a list on paper or electronically, or send a photo of the package. You’ll be more likely to get the item you want.
